Learn How To Find Powerful Expired Domains Step By Step

Are you taking full advantage of expired domains at the moment?

Imagine being able to buy a domain that already has an awesome backlink profile and existing targeted traffic for the same price as a new domain.

You can use expired domains to:

  • Build out a new authority site to slingshot past the competition
  • Build out a powerful private blog network.
Whatever you do, you simply cannot ignore the power expired domains offer and today you are going to learn how to harness that power properly.

What Can You Use Expired Domains For?

Although there are lots of things expired domains can be used for, I personally use expired domains in 3 different ways:

    • Building authority sites
    • Building a private blog network
    • 301 redirects

In a moment I am going to show you the easiest way to find powerful expired domains with traffic.

But before I do that, I want to make sure that you understand exactly what you can use expired domains for in a bit more detail.

Method #1 – Building Authority Sites

When I build a new authority site or niche site, I never do it on a brand new domain.

The problem with new domains is that you have to invest in building up their authority from an SEO perspective which costs significant time & money to do.

Instead I prefer to  register an expired domain that already has authority.

That gives me a huge head start and quite often building out a content rich site on a powerful expired domain is enough to crack the first page rankings without any work.

I recently bought a domain from Spamzilla and set the site up on July 2nd which won it’s first featured snippet on August 17th-

site growth using an expired domain

You just wouldn’t have that advantage with a brand new domain!

    And the best bit?

Registering an expired domains costs exactly the same as registering a brand new domain.

Method #2 – Building A Private Blog Network

In essence you use expired domains to build a fleet of high quality highly authoritative sites in a specific niche and then you use those sites to rank your site.

Look at how we used them to 14x search traffic for this site

14x Search Traffic SEO Case Study Infographic

But all of that starts with finding expired domains in your niche that have a clean link profile and spam free history which is easier said than done.

    Method #3 – 301 Redirects

Simply take the expired domain you bought and 301 redirect it to your main site.

This will pass over a portion of the link juice and authority of the expired domain to your site immediately. Bonus points if that domain has existing traffic!

However this method comes with a warning, you can get away with doing 1 or 2 of these to your main site for a quick shortcut:

But I wouldn’t recommend it as a regular link building habit.

How To Find Powerful Expired Domains Easily

Now you know how to use expired domains to your advantage, I am going to show you the easiest ways to find them.

There are 2 tools I like to use – a piece of software called Domain Hunter Gatherer and a web based tool called Spamzilla.

Either of these tools can be used for finding powerful expired domains easily!

But I am going to show you how to do it with Domain Hunter Gatherer because that’s a little be trickier to work with (Spamzilla is fairly self explanatory)

There are a number of ways you can use it to find expired domnains.

    • 5 Ways To Find Expired Domains:
      • Hunt From Keywords: Enter some keywords from your niche and the software will find expired domains with links from webpages that are currently ranking for those keywords.
      • Hunt From Websites: Crawl specific website(s) to find expired domains that they link to. Eg you could find expired domains with links from Wikipedia/The New York Times etc.
      • Reverse Hunt Domains: Enter a domain and the software will find all fo the backlinks to that domain and then scan them to find expired domains. Great for snapping up domains that also link to your competitors.
      • Auction Hunter: Enter your keywords to search 8 expired domain marketplaces & look up important metrics.
      • Web 2.0 Hunter: Find relevant expired web 2.0 domains from 20 different web 2.0 platforms.

    • No 3rd Party Services Required: The software also fetches metrics from Majestic & Moz at no additional cost which saves 100’s of dollars per month. It is an all in one solution.
    • Filtering/Sorting: You can easily sort and filter by any metric you can imagine including countries and languages. You can even filter to buy expired domains with traffic!
    • Bonus Feature: You can rebuild entire websites in just 1 click, watch the video below to learn more.

Take a look at how easy it is to use along with some of my own exclusive personal tips & advice in this video.

I’ll also share a bonus tip that shows you how to register expired domains with traffic! Watch over my shoulder as a find an expired domain with over 11,000 visitors per month in the mental health niche.

    Resources In The Video

Domain Hunter Gatherer – Easily the best tool on the market to find powerful expired domains quick & easily with no additional costs.
BuyProxies.org – My preferred proxy provider, you can use the much cheaper semi-dedicated ones.

You can download the expired domain checklist below-

    Wrapping It Up

So there you have it, now you know not only how to use expired domains to your advantage but also the easiest way to find them.

Whether you want to buy expired domain with traffic or a huge SEO authority – you are armed with the knowledge you need to gain an unfair advantage.

Not only that, but you also know how to rebuild entire expired websites in 1 click which will save you a ton of money and time!

So I only have one question for you

How will you take advantage of expired domains in your business?

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is an expired domain?
An expired domain is a domain that was previously registered by a person or business that was not renewed before the expiration date. Then they can be re-registered by somebody else.

How do I find out when a domain expires?
You can find out when any domain expires easily by using one of the many free whois lookup tools like https://who.is

Tools like this will tell you an awful lot of things about the domain including precisely when it expires when it was registered, who is the current registered owner along with contact details.

How do I find out who owns a domain?
If you want to check who owns a domain, you can use Whois or websites such as Tucows or GoDaddy. All you need to do is enter the exact URL or the full domain name and you can find all the information available about that domain.

What happens if your domain expires?
If your domain expires then it will immediately become inactive. This means all the services that are attached to it also stop functioning.

You cannot make updates to an expired domain but the domain should be available for you to reactivate with your previous rate within the Expired Domain list.

What is the grace period for domain renewal?
A domain renewal ‘grace period’ is the period of time that someone can renew their expired domain for the normal renewal price.

Most domain providers will offer a 40-day renewal grace period but this could vary so be sure to check out and make note of how many days you have to renew your expired domain when purchasing.

      Hi Matthew,

Great post! I tried to repurpose an expired domain to build an authority site (your method 1) – but it doesn’t rank as it should. i checked the backlink profile via majestic and archive.org and it’s clean. also checked the metrics of the competition. with the amount of trust and link juice my expired domain has vs. the competition, it should be on page 1 for those keywords. is there something i’m missing here?

      Hi Matthew,
I’m on my way to start a niche website – my second one. After working for the first one, I learnt that expired domains give a head start to the hard work I’m going to put in.
Searching more on the topic, I came here in your website. I have few queries on this.
I have found few domains matching my niche. But there are few issues- some have web archive history or has links from non-target countries.
      My questions are:
      1. I have expired domains which has web archive history and they are not related to my domain. The only thing is that they have my niche keyword in the domain name. Does web archive history affect the ranking? What if the expired domain is not related to my niche?
      2. What if majority of the inbound links come from countries which I’m not targeting? Most of the backlinks to these expired domains are coming from non-US countries. But I’m targeting US.

      Sorry for bit long.
      Awaiting for your reply

        1) Is the history spammy in any way or only irrelevant?

        2) It would be better to come from the US but not critical

      Hey Matt,

I was wondering what your minimum metrics are when buying a PBN domain (DA,PA, TF, CF)?

Also, have you had much success with Domain Hunter Gatherer finding any gems? So far my results haven’t been particularly overwhelming…

      Hi Matthew,

I followed your tutorial but I’m still struggling to find domains that match the critieria tf/cf 15/15 and da 15. I mean there are plenty of domains with those metrics but they are not english domains like .jp .ad are those still good to use in PBN’s even though they are in different language?

Nice post. One of websites I use to find good expired domains to build websites on them is http://www.expireddomains.com

They provide a good list of keyword, brandable domains that will end the same day on GoDaddy Auctions and if I find something I like I’ll just check if it has any backlinks. brandable/keyword domains + backlinks is a winner!

Yes that’s why it’s good to use tools like this one where you will find domains that are freely available to register with any domain registrar

    92. Ben

Your guide is great and I started with scrapebox but found all the different processes a bit confusing and very time consuming so I tried DHG, it took a while to get all the settings to suit me but I can now find high quality expired domains and web 2 in just a few clicks which makes the overall process far faster than scrapebox.

    103. Gary Box

Really interesting article. Whilst I realise there will be lots of work in building a PBN Domain Hunter Gatherer should at least automate some of the work.

I’ve purchased it today. I only have 10 private proxies but searches seem to take all day. Also unlike the examples you show in your video, the results I get are generally not that great. By that I mean it’s hard to find a single domain that has decent trust rank and is not considered spammy at the same time.

Is there something over and above what is in this article that I am missing? I do wonder why someone would just give up a domain if it had some value. I’m trying to build backlinks for domains that are quite niche with relatively small likely traffic.

Would welcome any comments. I need to decide whether to continue with the software after initial 7 days and to judge it fairly I want to make sure I’m not missing anything. So far today I’m not convinced it will turn up anything like the examples given in this video.

Well Gary, the problem is there are lots of people scraping the web for domains so finding those golden gems is often a bit of a hunt.

Not everyone looks at domains that are expiring with SEO in mind and websites just naturally come and go.

Start with the cheapest plan and work your way up if you need to.

    112. Tony

      Hi. Matthew.

I am really new to all this. I am about to launch my blog in the next week. I have a domain and a wordpress blog set ready to go. Clearly it will have no traffic from day one and I guess it will take a while to build up. So my question is would you advise a begginer like me to stick with the one blog for a while and build it up. Or is it worth investing the time early on to master how to find expired domains and link them to the blog?

      • Matthew Woodward
        November 8th, 2016 at 10:26 am

Yes stick with one blog for now, build out a solid base of content and get your first 100 subscribers.

        Then worry about other stuff.

The only thing you may want to consider right now, is to actually build your blog on an expired domain that already has strong SEO metrics.

    113. Onehalf AU

While getting a new domain name will give your site a clean slate and allow you to start a fresh marketing campaign, you may not be aware of the fact that some expired domains come with a high Page Rank value. A company that buys such a domain will not have to work so hard on website promotion and backlink building techniques. Thanks for updating this really informative post!

Loved your post as always Matt. I have a question though. You see, I’ve found an expired domain with DA 30 but I don’t know whether it’s been a victim of Google’s Manual spam action or not? Without buying that domain, can you give me an idea how to check it please? I would really be grateful.

      • Matthew Woodward
        November 1st, 2016 at 3:10 pm

You have to look at all the other factors to figure that out.

Is the backlink profile clean or heavily spammed with exact match anchors?

Look at the domain in archive.org, was it a good site before or repurposed as someone elses private blog network at some point?

You can even put the domain into something like SEMRush to get an idea of if it used to rank and if there were any sudden traffic drops that weren’t related to the expiry of the domain etc

    116. Kaushik Dutta

    118. Rick

      Hi Matthew,

Is there a way of not gathering the metrics of domains I do not want. It finds lots of tld’s which I don’t want to use because registration is not possible, too expensive or I just don’t want those. Now the software finds them and metrics are pulled. These are eating the credits of 50.000 which you get with a subscription of DHG.

      • Rick
        October 26th, 2016 at 9:35 am

Or when you set the filters before scraping, will DGH pass the domains in the filters for pulling the metrics?

      Hi Matthew,
I tested the tool seem to be good but is not getting Moz or Majestic metrics.
Show 0 as metrics in more than 3000 domains that the tool found.
      Do you know why?

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 26th, 2016 at 2:54 pm

Do any of the domains show metrics?

I suspect the big DDOS attack that has hit the web and key DNS servers maybe responsible for the missing data

    122. Tom

I am trialing EDH pro and have entered your recommended metrics (for expired domains) as a filter, and am searching thousands of expired domains but the filter is not letting any through. Its like the metrics are set way too high.
In 4 massive multiple keyword searches that took several hours each I found 2 domains, but then did spam check and they failed.

I am so amped to find some gems but Im not finding it easy, what am I doing wrong?

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 26th, 2016 at 3:02 pm

        No problem Bharti!

    124. Craig Cooper

I keep telling myself I should get rid of domains and not acquire more, but you make a very tempting point for the getting more

Well if you’re not using them, ditch them :)

Hey Matthew, great to see a local Cheshire guy doing so well and giving out so much great info. What’s your view on register compass? Worth the money ?

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 17th, 2016 at 10:59 am

        Thanks :)

Register Compass isn’t a bad tool by any means, but it’s not always so easy to find great domains with it.

    126. adrian

what plan we need to use it this way?

        October 15th, 2016 at 9:35 am

        How do you mean?

    127. Harris

This is exactly what I am looking for. Thanks for this post.

I just got my 7 day trail of Pro hunter and playing with it. It is really easy to use and very fast results.

Only one thing confused me, that is “Google index”. I am getting very few domains with G index from thousands of expired domain. and it is really a gamble if I buy de-indexed expired domain.

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 15th, 2016 at 9:35 am

Most expired domains will not be indexed by Google anymore, because the domain is expired. Once its live again with a site on it, Google will reindex it.

    128. Shaheen Adibi

Anything that you’d recommend that’s cloud based or for Mac OSX?

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 15th, 2016 at 9:36 am

You could use BlueChipBacklinks or alternatively buy a real computer :P

          October 18th, 2016 at 10:43 am

          Hah thanks!, and fair enough!

Thats great article as expected from you, let me buy some expired domains first then back to you :)

      Hi Matthew,
      This software is PC only.
Where would you suggest to run it as a Mac user?
Thanks for all your great advice!

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 15th, 2016 at 9:38 am

As a mac user, you either need to buy a real computer :P or use something like BlueChipBacklinks

          October 15th, 2016 at 7:36 pm

I took a look at BCh and at first it sound good, but the domains they display need to be checked by Moz, Majestic and ahrefs from spamed links.
Unless you are selling domains or need a lot of them for your clients it is cheaper to buy from a trusted seller.
But let me insist: isn’t there any kind of server where you can install this PC software?

          • Matthew Woodward
            October 17th, 2016 at 11:02 am

They provide all of those metrics in BCh?

Yes you could install this software on a Windows VPS from PowerUpHosting and have it running 24/7

    131. Matt

Great tutorial. Shame there aren’t many domains with decent backlink profiles in my niche though.

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 14th, 2016 at 9:25 am

        What is your niche?

    132. Abhi

Very useful article, I just got to know about that how useful the expired sub domains can be for quality links.

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 14th, 2016 at 9:26 am

Yeah they are great to use and free!

    133. Moon

Hey Matthew, Really nice video. THis looks like a really handy tool. I do have a couple of questions though:
      1. I imagine you need to use proxies?
      2. This is installed on your computer right? So, how long did it take to run a search and did it slow down your computer?

I know these are “sort of broad” questions. Indulge me? TY.

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 14th, 2016 at 9:27 am

You don’t need to use proxies, but having them speeds up the process of scraping and you can use the cheap semi dedicateds from BuyProxies

Yes this is a desktop tool which is surprisingly light on resource usage!

    134. Prixca

Great article but i am confuse to setup pbn domain.. for example: i got expire domain, how can i setup domain ? can i use old data from wayback machine like article etc. or use new article? what is the initial step to post the article and get backlink?

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 14th, 2016 at 9:27 am

You can rebuild the site yes, but my preferred method is to build out a new site that looks like a real authority site

    135. Brandon

Is their a mac or online alternative for domain hunter?

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 14th, 2016 at 9:27 am

        I don’t think so sorry

        • Matthew Woodward
          October 14th, 2016 at 9:28 am

          You could try BlueChipBacklinks

          • Moon
            October 14th, 2016 at 4:51 pm

Matthew-lol. So which one is better, you find? BlueChip Or Domain Hunter? Guessing similar tools

            • Matthew Woodward
              October 15th, 2016 at 9:35 am

They are similar tools in many ways, but they also have their own unique features. No matter which one you decide to use, it wouldn’t be a bad choice.

    136. Promo Guru

Do you have an example authority site you have built using an ED?

    137. john

Useful video matt I’ve been using DHG as my main tool for pbn for quite some time. I never considered checking traffic and I bet I’ve missed on some great gems. Part of my own strategy is I also use ahrefs metrics because they have a better index than moz and majestic.

Quite a lot of the time majestic trust flow will be great but ref domains below 10 but when I check ahrefs its considerably higher for ref domains. Without ahrefs I would of passed over these domains and missed out. Worthwhile addition if your building a lot of pbns. I also use linkultra backlink for my final spam check as it checks language, site type and if backlinks are comment, profile spammed etc enabling me to check if the backlinks of the domain are solid very quick.

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 14th, 2016 at 9:31 am

Yes Ahrefs have a bigger index, but I actually find the metrics from Majestic to be more reliable but as always, the more data sources you have – the better!

    138. Mat

Great post Matt, just what I was looking for thank you!

Good luck with your domain hunt!

    140. Antonio Mecca

Hey Matthew, awesome post as always. For this seo technique i often use expireddomains.net and after i check it with majestic seo if backlink profile is good or is spammy. Now i’m going to try this peace of software :)

      • Matthew Woodward
        October 14th, 2016 at 9:32 am

Yes that works but takes a long time and you are only seeing a very narrow scope of domains where as domain hunter gatherer actually goes out and spiders the web looking for expired domains

        • Antonio Mecca
          October 14th, 2016 at 10:04 am

yes of course, i’m trying domain hunter gatherer, is a very strong tool. Just yesterday i have found 3 lovely websites. Thanks to you Matthew, I’ll buy you a beer. :D

              October 16th, 2016 at 7:21 am

Great post. I planned to build my PBN websites for my money site. Most of the tutorials teach me never link out more than one money site. Explain me briefly, What would you recommend?

          October 20th, 2016 at 5:42 am

Most of PBN experts teach me, Your PBN should link out to only one money site. Please explain me how many links we can place on our PBN’s?

          • Matthew Woodward
            October 26th, 2016 at 2:59 pm

Yes link to your money site only once, but you should also link out to other sites as well to camouflage things a little

        Great, awesome post as always.
Make sure you use different hosting and IP Class for each PBN, also set all domain WHOIS to private, so google can’t track that these are your PBN. However, google hate the PBN strategy.
