Hey! My name is Matthew Woodward – I have won a lot of blog awards and earned money from my blog. So far, I have made almost $60,000.

I created my blog only in August 2012, and it has really enabled me to do the things I want to do with more freedom than ever before.

I can travel around the world and work wherever I want.

In this post, I aim to show you how to start a blog and get you blogging career rolling! I want this to be as easy as possible for you, so this guide will be simple. Going through the process step by step.

You Will Find Out How To

  • Get a domain name and start a blog with WordPress
  • Optimise your blog for search engines
  • Utilise social media
  • Create a blog that is mobile responsive
  • Ensure your blog’s security and automatically back it up daily
  • Securing your blog and setting-up automatic daily back-ups

If you want, I can even tell you how to create a form on the side bar that will give your readers the option of subscribing via email.

Let’s do this!

Getting Started

Before we begin, we should first glance at what the final product will be.

Below is a screenshot of the blog I created along with a sample post. You can take note of the fact that it also boasts social icons and links from affiliates.

make a blog

How To Get a Domain Name

In order to begin with your blog we first need to set up a domain name and find a blog hosting service.

I prefer JustHost because they are a well-known company with reliable uptime. Plus, their service comes with a domain at no extra cost. It is super easy!

Here’s what to do: go to JustHost and click the red button that says sign up now. It will prompt you to enter a domain name. You can do so and then click next.

how to start a blog with JustHost

It will ask for some more information, which you should fill out. You also get to pick a plan for your account — at this point, a one year plan is okay.

Also, be sure to make a good, strong password!

Installing WordPress

First, you will need to log in to your account on JustHost (you can do this with your newly-created domain and password). After you have access to the administrator tools, click on websites.

Here are the next steps:

  • Click on the option to install WordPress
  • When you get to the next step, leave Installation Preferences and Advanced Options at their default settings
  • Deselect the recommended plugins and themes box — we will deal with that stuff in a bit
  • Click complete at the bottom of the screen

Congratulations! At this point you have installed the basic WordPress set up.

One quick thing you should do, just in case, is write down the password and login.

There is no need to be intimidated by WordPress — it powers about 18% of the web and is made with non-coders in mind, so mastering the basics will not be hard.

how to start a blog

Now, you might be going insane with blogging by this point, so feel free to change the name of the site to anything you want. I’m going with Blogsanity. Then click save.

how to start a blog

Next you should head over to the left side of your screen and choose settings, then click on permalinks.

What is next?

  • Select the custom structure option, and put in this: /%category%/%postname%/
  • Download plugins — both the pack from my blog and the exclusive list that I recommend
  • Keep all of your plugins in the same folder

Installing Plug-Ins

how to setup a blog

To install plug-ins, here are the steps to follow:

You want to install all of these awesome plugins, so here is the process to do so.

  1. Choose new.
  2. Upload the plugin file.
  3. Do these steps with each plugin you want to add.

With my recommendations, you only have nine plugins to worry about.

Configuring Plugins

create a blog easily

Start by choosing SEO on the left hand side of your screen. Once there you can sign up, grab the verification meta values and put them in the appropriate forms.

Also be sure to keep titles and metas in mind — select the option for all four and then save your settings.

You will want to take advantage of Google author highlighting, and in order to do that you need to head over to Google+ and build a profile.

After you get a URL for your Google+ page, you should go back to WordPress. Look on the left side of your screen and click on users. Then choose edit. Here, you can paste your Google+ profile URL so that Google+ Authorship works on your end.

Before moving on, hop back over to WordPress SEO. You should go to title & metas — find taxonomies and choose the option to noindex the pages. Be sure to save your changes.

Finally, find your way to the help section and copy “%%excerpt%%.” Then place it in the right boxes.

Improving Blog Security

improve blog security

You do not want to have to always worry about people hacking into your blog, so we are going to boost your blog’s security.

In the tweaks section, select every box that appears in yellow.

Once that is over with, return to the dashboard to deal with points four, five, and six. When you choose four it will prompt you to change the user admin ID.

Then you will need to re-log in. After that, get over to the dashboard and rename the other points.

Back Up Your Blog

backup your wordpress blog

You should have your blog backed up in case the worst happens, so mosey on over to backup and choose Add New Job.

There will be a few settings you can tinker around with. One choice is where your backup will go to — I like having it sent via email. Remember to save your changes.

Our next stop is the schedule tab, where you can pick when your automatic backups happen. I’m going to opt for daily backups at three, which is the basic setting. Don’t forget to save your important changes.

Also drop by Files and make sure that it knows you want to back up plugins.

To make sure that you get your entire blog backed up, we need to get rid of the maximum file size. You can do this by setting the maximum to zero.

Where are we now? A good place — we have a blog that is optimised for search engines, secure against attacks, and automatically backed up.

Now we can build on that groundwork.

Configuring Social Sharing

wordpress social sharing

You probably want a social media side bar, so let’s make it.

Go to Global Config and put in your Twitter handle. (Don’t have a Twitter yet? I think the best idea is to just go ahead and make one.)

Next, allow normal display. For the time being, you can keep the defaults.

One thing you should do is uncheck all of the sharing options and then just choose those that you actually want. After the content, you can add Twitter, Google +1, and the Facebook like button.

Another tool we want is Pretty Link, which lets us mask all affiliate links.

How do you add this? On the options screen, you will want to switch link options to Permanent 301 and  add no follow to link box. After that, update the changes.

Adding Affiliate Links

wordpress affiliate link management

We are ready to add affiliate link #1! For this sample, we can use my HostGator affiliate.

What do we want to have happen? Every time a user goes to blogsanity.com/hostgator, the URL will direct them to the affiliate link.

You can create it, because we will need to put that link in our very first post.

Setting up Google Analytics

wordpress google analytics

You can jump over to Settings > Google Analytics. It will allow us to enter a web property ID, so you should do that and then save the change.

Doing this will let you get access to all of the Google Analytics stats — visitor numbers, most popular content, etc.

Setting up a Contact Form

Wordpress contact form

One way for visitors to get in touch with you is a contact form. Click Pages, then Add New. Choose the Contact Me option.

In the blank space, write the following: “Please do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions or comments. I’ll do my best to get back to you within 48 hours. Thanks!”

Then we can go to our SEO control box to set some meta and title descriptions.

Theme Installation

wordpress theme installation

WordPress has thousands of free and paid themes to choose from. Start by going to Appearances and Themes > Install Themes.

It will show a lot of newer themes. I’m going to install Montezuma, a theme I really like because it works on mobile devices.

Once it installs, activate it. Now you are ready to write your first post!

Publishing Posts

publishing first wordpress post

Creating posts in WordPress is a piece of cake. Hover over the Posts link and click Add New.

There is a clearly marked box for a title. Try something like this:  “Hello There! Welcome to the blog.” Type some stuff in, and maybe even attach an image (you can upload one or choose one from the gallery).

Adding YouTube Video

wordpress youtube videos

It is pretty easy to add YouTube content to posts on your blog.

Adding Link to Host Gator Affiliate

adding affiliate links

Remember our HostGator affiliate link? It is time to put that to use.

There are many different options: tabs, boxes, etc.

Let’s try a button. All we need to do is put the affiliate URL in the link spot, and then change the display text to “Visit HostGator Now.” Hit confirm, add shortcode, and then this step is complete!

We need a category, so call it “personal.”  For SEO, the title will be “Hello There! Welcome to my blog.”

What about the meta description? Try something like this: “Welcome to Blogsanity, the part of the web where bloggers go nuts, 24/7!”

Are you ready? All you need to do is click publish. Now your post is live!

Published Post

Everything looks great! We can see our sharing options, video, and our post.

checkout your first post

Setting Up the Side Bar

To configure the side bar, you will need to head over to Appearance and Widgets. There are different things we could display: newest posts, a search box, etc.

E-Mail Subscription Form

If everything has made sense so far, why not go the extra mile? I advise you to create an email newsletter — when visitors subscribe you can collect their data.

email optin setup

Amassing a solid number of email subscribers is a huge part of your blog. How do you do that? An AWeber account will help, so let’s take a speedy look at that.

Setting Up an AWeber Account

For just a buck, you can make an AWeber account. Go ahead and do so, then log in.

Once inside, there is a process to follow:

  • Make an email list
  • Get a sign-up form
  • Pick a template, any template
  • Shift the template width to 320 pixels
  • Find colours that are distinct
  • See the box that prompts you to enter text and type something like, “Please subscribe. I will never spam you.”
  • Format it — center the text
  • Save the form before exiting

Next, name it. As per our theme today, I’ll call it Blogsanity.

Don’t forget to save the form!

Create an Email Subscription Box

First, head to Settings and lick on AWeber Web Form. Once you log in you can get the code it provides and type it in when prompted.

Second, navigate over to Widgets. Find the AWeber Form and drag it to the very top. As always, remember to save!

aweber setup

You now have an email subscription form set up, and once visitors begin to add their information you can start marketing to them.

You’re done! I have guided you through the process of setting up a search engine optimized, responsive, mobile-compatible blog.

You are even ready to connect with visitors using your social sharing buttons and contact page. These are the building blocks for making profit online.

What Next?

You can use this blog that you have set up as a test site, an affiliate platform, or your main blog — but no matter what you choose, you have no excuse to not blog now.

You now have the skills and the knowledge to start a blog, so why not? Follow in my foot steps and pave your path to success!

Thanks again Matt! Great work as always, I’m curious to see if you’ve ever heard of a plugin for WordPress called Duplicator? It’s similar to BackWPup, but I think it’s a little more fully featured and is pretty much a drop in solution (even sets up your data base for you.) I’ve just got a website up and running using this code, now I’m going to go and go over your other tutorials again to try and generate some backlinks! I can never seem to get it to work though :(

Really approve of this. The internet in general will only benefit from having more quality content out there, and this makes it supremely accessible to do so for the less technically minded. Article directories be damned!

Matt, your ability to create high quality content is epic. It is inspiring me to get that long thought about gaming blog started!

Nicely done :) I was actually working on making a series like this on how to set up a WordPress website as well :) Good to see that there are more people out there wanting to help others for free :)

I know how much it takes to record, edit, voiceover, and publish a video (I’ve done quite a few myself, just haven’t “Launched” the series yet) so I’ll thank you for taking the time and effort to make these great resources for people to use :)

    • Matthew Woodward

Be great to see your take on a more detailed series!

Hit me up when its done!

  8. Serge

Sorry, forgot to give my input on a few things:

It doesn’t matter too much for MOST bloggers, but when you get to have a larger blog (Several hundred -or thousand- posts), it is actually quite a bit more efficient to just have /%postname%/ for your permalinks because WordPress cannot tell the difference between Categories and Posts, so when it’s looking at, say… matthewwoodward.co.uk/tutorials/how-to-XYZ, it cannot tell if “Tutorials” is a category, page, or post; so it goes through all of them to find the match. Next, it goes to “How-to-XYZ” and repeats the process; taking twice the time.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but you didn’t go into the XML Sitemap portion of the SEO Plugin (which is important if you’re going to be connecting the blog to your Google Webmaster Tools). This is one of the only reasons I use Yoast SEO over SEO Ultimate (SEO Ultimate does not have a built-in XML Sitemap feature).

    • Sergey Marchuk

It seems that it didn’t post my first comment, so here it is:

    • Matthew Woodward

No doing it with just postname is wrong. In the old days of SEO is was right but not anymore.

Whether wordpress can tell the difference between categories, pages or posts is irrelevant – we structure it like that for Google.

Hmm thought I covered the sitemap, was in my notes =/ doh ^^

      • Serge
        June 8th, 2013 at 7:19 am

we all miss things every now and then xD

I can’t wait till WordCamp makes its’ way to Portland, Oregon and I’d love to find out the answer from the WP folks for sure regarding the Permalink structure and database loads (Not that I’m doubting you, I just heard that fairly recently; I was doing /%category%/%postname%/ before actually)

Practice makes perfect n all that! Might re-edit it when I get time.

Just do some research around site structure in general – its a great topic to explore.

Matthew — Another educational post! Thanks for the Pretty Links tip. I was wondering what you used to cloak your affiliate links.

I have one quick question: What plugin (if it is a plugin) are you using for the subscribe box on the right that stays with the reader as he or she scrolls down the page? I really like that.

And congratulation on the success of your blog. I see that you already have an Alexa rank around 19,554. That’s very impressive for a blog that is only 10 months old.

Good video for people new to setting up a WordPress blog.

Quick addition to installing the plugins, every time I started a blog I found it a bit of a pain installing each one, one by one. Check out this plugin that will bulk install a list of plugins in one click and activate them http://wordpress.org/plugins/bulk-plugin-installation/ Then you just need to keep a notepad file with the name of your plugins you want to bulk install. Anything to save time!

  24. Jonny

This looks like a great tutorial. I have had my hyper-local website for over 2 years now but never really spent a lot of time on it, but I am constantly inundated with PR requests that I should really monetise. I have been put off by all the negative comments about hyper-local websites not being able to make any money, but I am willing to try so I hope I can use this tutorial to improve my site.

Finally, do you think the hyphen in the URL with have any negative effect? The domain wasn’t available when I registered, and I recently missed out on it again and now its a spammy site!

    • Matthew Woodward

I prefer to avoid hyphens personally just from a user perspective more than anything though!

  25. Hernan

Hey Matthew. I’m planning on starting a blog for my company. I already have wordpress installed for my company’s website. But we are not using the blog feature. Would you recommend on starting a subdomain (blog.mycompany.com) or installing wordpress on a subfolder (mycompany.com/blog) so that I can install and tweak like this?

I’m afraid that many of the plugins we’ve currently installed on my website will conflict…

    • Matthew Woodward

  32. lee hill

The document is a great addition to the video, the video is a great way to watch it first then the document is better for implementing the methods.

I think you should make it a downloadable branded PDF.

    Hi Matt

    Thanks for the tutorial..

How to write a unique article for the blog? cause I am not an English writer. How many words per article normally?

    • Matthew Woodward
      October 23rd, 2013 at 1:52 pm

How ever many words you need to write – don’t worry about it so much.

If English is not your first language then you might want to outsource the articles – but avoid the cheap $5 per article guys, you get what you pay for and they don’t read well for an english audience usually.

Really is a great guide! Got a blog set up really fast. I only got one little hiccup at the end, when trying to authorize the AWeber Web Form Plugin, I get this msg “Unable to connect to your AWeber Account (Unable to connect to the AWeber API):
Please make sure you entered the complete authorization code and try again.”
Been searching all over and trying it a dozen of times. Any idea of how to fix this?

    Again, really great guide!

    • Matthew Woodward

    Hello Matthew,

I have a local site with one competitive keyword ranking page one in Google. I intend to rent out this site to local client. May I know any method (preferable simple and free) that could divert to client’s site when viewers click on my site?

    • Matthew Woodward
      March 12th, 2014 at 8:37 am

Well if you start redirecrting traffic entirely you’ll probably lose the ranking.

Just slap a big call to action to click through to the clients site

      June 23rd, 2014 at 1:21 am

Well if you need any help you know where to find me! My first tip would be to find a new theme that you fall in love with and then work on a content strategy!

  70. Hopeton Wilson

What do you mean in the part “hop back over to WordPress SEO. You should go to title & metas — find taxonomies and choose the option to noindex the pages”
Why should you choose noindex, does that mean you are telling google not to index the pages?

    • Matthew Woodward
      June 26th, 2014 at 7:03 pm

Yes, not to index the taxonomy pages like categorys and tags

  71. Hopeton Wilson

Another question Matt, I followed your instructions and used the Montezuma theme for a blog i just started, but i notice the header is just plain and simple and looks unprofessional. Is it that theme you use for this blog? How can i add some image or something in the header of the theme?

    • Matthew Woodward
      July 2nd, 2014 at 1:18 am

Well that theme is just to get you started feel free to change it however you want. My theme is the convergence theme.

    Hi Matt

Thanks for the great blog post and used it to get my cousin up and running with his first every website/blog, so thanks

There are many themes with landing page that shows latest posts contents with limited characters. Do you think that is good for SEO?

    • Matthew Woodward

It certainly help with internal linking!

  75. Victoria

Hi. Please, warn people that if they follow your instructions (minute 9.50) about security plugin installation, the standard wordpress blog editor will be turned off. I spent an hour today to find out what had turned it off -_-
The other stuff is great! Thank you

    • Matthew Woodward
      August 14th, 2014 at 4:56 pm

Can you explain a little more about that please? It might be a new option since I made the tutorial

  76. Victoria

You can watch the video – in the 9th minute you ask to mark all the checkboxes in better wp security plugin settings. The last checkbox removes wordpress original theme editor (http://gyazo.com/ebdc0da7f8862b3c516779cac2c3bd20). Its obvious if you read the name of checkboxes, but I didn’t and just followed your instructions :) So the editor link dissapeared from my appearance tab (http://gyazo.com/d6fc758cdddf469a71a86131644605c4). And using this editor while blogging is an essential thing. I’m warning you because in the future people might ask such a question. It’s not such a big thing to modify the video. Hope, it was useful.

    Hi Matthew:

This is a great post and inspired me to open a blog.

    My questions are:

    1. After 2 years is this post up to date?

    2. Do the affilliate links work with people who read in other languages?

I live in Colombia, so I don’t know if those affiliate links will work for people who read and buy in spanish written websites.

    3. How do I install Google Adsense in the blog?

Thanks for sharing..! It’s an awesome tips about starting new blog and win award…

I plan to imigrate my blog from Ipage to Siteground or Maybe Hostgator. However, now I found another hosting which you recommended.

However, the price is really great but I’m worrying about slow loading speed.

Anyway, what did you thing if I host on $2 hosting with 3500 visitor a months..

What are you having problems with specifically?

  119. Glenn Cooper

    Wow, just wow…

I only started reading into SEO in the last month, and stumbled across this site via. BHW (another excellent IM platform). I am just overwhelmed by the amount of top quality content. It’s not even the content itself, but how it’s been presented, it’s honestly as it you’ve mulled over every single possible aspect of Internet marketing.

My only concern, is that I wish I knew about all of this earlier!

    Hi Mattew!
first of all thank you, you’ve made it so clear!
    I’ve got one question though:
what if I already have a web domain (I bought it from WordPress)
plus I already have a portfolio/blog site on WordPress for School purpose,(which I didn’t pay for by the way)
    as I’m a Multimedia Designer.
is it Possible to open ANOTHER blog with my domain on WordPress as you recommended?
I’d love to have a another one apart from school and I Was wondering if that would be possible
without paying again, even though I’d like to have the full control on it.
Thanks in advance and have a nice day

    • Matthew Woodward
      October 29th, 2016 at 10:12 am

But yes you can use your domain however you want

    Hi Mathew. Wonder if you may have come across this or able to help;

I signed up to Bluehost and installed WordPress, and starting to set my site up I wanted to edit the CSS of a few elements of the site. I believe the option should be to go through ‘Appearance’ and then ‘Editor’… only the editor function isn’t available?

Would you know why this could be or have you come across this before?

Any help / advice would be great.

Following this step by step guide (which is great) – paid for the domain hosting – now being asked to pay for wordpress but this wasn’t a step on your tutorial?

Do I (have to) pay $99 on top of the $80 or so I’ve already paid?

Looks like I only have this option as I’ve tried wordpress direct but being hosted by bluehost seems to mean I’d have to map it with wordpress premium?

Confused – was ok with the video but sites have moved on since your video was made and screens/options are now different :-(

    • Rodney Lacambra
      July 13th, 2017 at 10:04 pm

Hey Kishan, though free blogging platforms like Blogger or WordPress.com offers a great start. I personally don’t recommend it. There’s a lot of reasons you need to build your blog on a self-hosted instead if you’re serious about what you are doing.

You can try Namecheap for your domain name registration, it’s pretty cheap domain. For your hosting service provider, there’s a lot alternative yet provides great service.

Try SiteGround or Bluehost. However, try your own research prior buying web host.

      Thank you so much.
